East Riding of Yorkshire council worked with leading roof systems manufacturer, Marley, to deliver a full roof system. This included the Marley SolarTile® – Marley’s integrated solar PV panels – for four new affordable houses on Burden Road in Beverley.
The project aimed to address the need for energy-efficient homes, support sustainability goals and optimise the use of public funds. This was all while creating attractive homes that sit well in their local surroundings.
Although Marley has been working with East Riding of Yorkshire Council for many years to provide roofing systems, the Burden Road project was the first new-build solar project for the council. This means the specification changed from a full system using Duo Edgemere Interlocking Concrete Slate tiles, fittings, battens and accessories, to a full system that also included the Marley SolarTile®. The project provided an opportunity for both Marley and the council to demonstrate how integrated solar technology can enhance energy efficiency and reduce tenant energy bills, setting new standards for future housing developments.
“By using Marley as a single-source supplier for the entire roofing system, the council benefits from having just one source of contact for the project. Marley provides everything from the battens up and arranges deliveries to suit the build schedule,” he explains.
The Marley technical team works closely with the council to further simplify the process. “We write the specification from the drawings they produce, and those are included in their tender packs when they go out to a main contractor,” James explains. “We offer technical help and commercial support through our distribution channels to ensure East Riding has cost-effective roofs that are fit for purpose,” he adds.
James also explains that Marley’s SolarTile® has been designed for easy installation, “We can work with installers to provide training when needed,” he says. “This helps to keep projects on track and ensures that the results meet all necessary standards.”
